East Midlands Airport sponsors Derbyshire Schools' Athletics Championships

More than 500 Derbyshire school pupils are set to compete at the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools' Track and Field Championships later this month.

This year the annual event is being sponsored by East Midlands Airport, along with all other upcoming events on the Derbyshire Schools Athletics calendar.

The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools Track and Field Championships will be staged at Moorways Sports Centre Stadium on Saturday, June 14.

It is the biggest schools event in the county, with 525 athletes expected to take part.

Anna Thomson, Community Relations Manager, East Midlands Airport said: "This is a really exciting opportunity and we’re thrilled to be sponsoring The Derbyshire Schools' Athletics Championships. Support for local initiatives has long been a feature of our work and EMA wish everyone taking part the very best of luck."

The first event will begin at 10am, and a full programme of track and field heats and finals will then follow, with the final relays scheduled for 3pm.

Competing will be teams representing Derbyshire Dales, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover, South Derbyshire, Erewash, Amber Valley, High Peak, Derby East and Derby West, who will compete in three age groups: Under 15 (School years 8 and 9); Under 17 (years 10 and 11); Under 19 (Yrs 12 and 13).

Among the athletes to keep a close eye on at the event will be:

  • Yasmin Spencer ( Lady Manners School, Chesterfield)- Inter Girls (Under 17) Shot (13.10m) - ranked No.2 in UK.
  • Claudia Rogers ( John Flamsteed School, Denby) - Intermediate Girls (Under 17) 300m Hurdles (45.07s) - ranked No.5 in UK.
  • Emma Komocki ( Ecclesbourne School, Duffield) - Intermediate Girls (Under 17) 300m Hurdles (45.6s) - ranked No.10 in UK.
  • Jenna Winson ( Noel Baker School, Derby) - Senior Girls (Under 19) Hammer (45.57m) – ranked in the top 10 in UK.
  • Yasmin Miller (St Benedicts School, Derby) - Junior Girls (Under 15) 75 metres Hurdles (11.45s) - ranked No.4 in UK.
  • Jack Andrew ( Chapel-en-le-Frith School, Chapel) - Inter Boys (Under 17) Pole Vault (4.20m) - ranked No.2 in UK.
  • Josh Moody ( Highfields School, Matlock)- Inter Boys (Under 17) 1500m (4m 07.6s) - ranked in the top 20 in UK.
  • James Selvey ( Hope Valley School, Hope Valley) - Junior Boys (Under 15) 1500m (4m 19.4s) – ranked in the top 20 in UK.

Liz Milne, Chairperson of Derbyshire Schools Athletics said: “This is always the highlight of the summer season for many of our young athletes, who regard this event as their Olympics. We are very pleased that East Midlands Airport has decided to become part of this great event and hope the performances of the athletes will impress everyone who watches.”

The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools Track and Field Championships is the second track and field event of the summer. It will be supported by more than 100 teachers acting as officials and team managers, together with local officials from UK Athletics.

It follows the County Combined Events Championships which were held in late May, and saw a County team selected to go to Milton Keynes on June 28 and 29 for the Midlands CE Championships.

Athletes who do well at the Track and Field Championships will be considered for the Inter County match at Leamington Spa on June 21 and the National Championships at Gateshead on July 11 and 12.

East Midlands Airport will also be sponsoring the Derbyshire Schools Miniathlon Championships, which will take place on Wednesday, July 2 at Moorways. The combined events competition will see teams of up to five athletes from each school compete.

It will also sponsor the Derbyshire Sports Hall Athletics Championships and the Derbyshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

The events are delivered by Derbyshire School Sports Association (DSSA), the lead body responsible for school sport in Derbyshire, together with Derbyshire Sport which will assist in supporting the sponsorship process.
