Medals for Chesterfield table tennis players at European Championships

25 July 2008

An unprecedented five table tennis players from Chesterfield were part of the England team to play for their country in the Cadet and Junior European Championships in Italy.

Liam Pitchford, Daniel Lowe and Sean Cullen made up three members of the four-strong cadet boys, while Lucy Davidson was part of the cadet girls team and Martha Travis was part of the junior girls team.

This year's championships have been heralded as the best that can be remembered as the England teams came back with nine medals, and Chesterfield's stars featured in many of them.

Playing against Belguim in the quarter finals, it fell to Liam Pitchford to produce the winning match and take the team into the semi-final, and after doing so history repeated itself and against Sweden he dug deep to take them into a possible gold medal position.

Their final match was against France, and saw the cadet boys bring home a much deserved European Silver medal.

Liam’s achievements out in Terni did not cease at the end of the team event, and he also brought home a European Bronze Singles medal.

Both Daniel Lowe and Sean Cullen also played in the singles event, with Daniel losing in the second round and Sean in the first. However Sean was able to play in the consolation tournament and came out the eventual winner.

Lucy Davidson had some tremendous experience being part of the cadet girls team for the first time and played her part in a final positioning of 18 for the team which is a marked improvement on the previous year.

She also won through to the second round in her singles.

Martha Travis was catapulted into the junior team and gained tremendous experience in playing in such a major event in the first round of the singles.
