Pupils take medals at East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools' Miniathlon Championships

Around 150 pupils from schools across Derbyshire gathered to compete for medals at the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Miniathlon Championships.

The pre-selected schools event saw year seven pupils competing in the 80m sprint, long jump, ball throw and 800 metres, with each pupil battling it out in three out of four of the track and field events at Moorways Sports Centre Stadium in Derby on July 2.

On hand to present the medals was Derbyshire shot-putter Rebecca Peake, GB No.1, who was joined by Leonie Parkin, Community Relations Executive at East Midlands Airport.

Taking the gold medal in the boys competition was Mason Bennett from Shirebrook School, who topped the scoreboard with 73 points. Closely behind him with 72 points, and picking up the silver medal, was Tom Morgan from Friesland School. The bronze medal went to Kane Jordan from Heanor Gate Science College, who scored a combined points total of 68.

Georgia Greenhalgh from Chapel-en-le-Frith High School won the gold medal in the girls competition, with 62 points, and the silver went to Alice Folding from Lees Brook Community School, who scored 61 points. There was a three-way tie for the bronze medal, with Ellen Ward of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Jennie Lockwood from Heanor Gate Science College and Lauren Drabble from Chapel-en-le-Frith High School all scoring 60 points.

The winning girls team was Chapel-en-le-Frith High School, with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School finishing in second place and Lees Brook Community School coming third.

The winning boys team was from Shirebrook School, followed by Ecclesbourne School in second place and Chapel-en-le-Frith High School in third.

The winning school overall was Chapel-en-le-Frith High School, with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School second and Shirebrook School finishing third.

This year’s Miniathlon Championships were sponsored by East Midlands Airport, along with all other events in the Derbyshire Schools’ Athletics Championships.

“The event promotes good team spirit and the young people love the mix of events.”

Schools fielding teams included John Port School, Lees Brook Community School, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Buxton Community School, Chapel-en-le-Frith High School, Ecclesbourne School, Friesland School, Glossopdale Community College, Heanor Gate Science College, Heritage Community School, Highfields School, Shirebrook School, Tupton Hall School and Woodlands School.

The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Miniathlon Championships was the third track and field event of the summer.

It followed the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools Track and Field Championships on June 14, and the County Combined Events Championships which were held in late May.

East Midlands Airport will also sponsor the Derbyshire Sports Hall Athletics Championships and the Derbyshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

The events are delivered by Derbyshire School Sports Association (DSSA), the lead body responsible for school sport in Derbyshire, together with Derbyshire Sport which is assisting in supporting the sponsorship process.
