Awards for All cash to boost sport in Derby

The club is to receive £7,661 to provide its new women’s side with coaching, pitch hire, kit and vital equipment such as cones, tackle bags, and speed and agility apparatus.

The club features 20 current members aged 18 or over who meet every Monday evening for training.

Martyn Rothwell, Coach and spokesperson, said: “The Derby City Rugby League Club has been around for 20 years, but when we took up residence at Derby Rugby Union Club recently, the female players there approached me with a view to setting up a women’s League team. We did exactly that but since that time have had to beg, borrow and steal everything we’ve needed to play.

“This funding will also help us to get volunteers onto nationally accredited coaching courses so that we can build a program that is sustainable and get younger girls playing at a later date, once the infrastructure is in place. Rugby League is not a mainstream sport compared to Rugby Union but all our players really engage with it and love it. Apart from getting fit the game itself teaches team work and commitment, and it can help build self-esteem and confidence too.”

Other projects receiving funding in Derby are Dwarf Athletic Association (East Midlands / Derbyshire Region), which will receive £10,000 to provide sports for people with different kinds of growth restrictions.

Traditional Taekwondo Association Derby is also to receive £6,075 to fund classes for those with low income backgrounds.

Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England , Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass-roots community groups and voluntary organisations.
