Extra funding to train sports coaches is awarded to Derbyshire

Derbyshire has been granted an additional £4,550 to support 20 coaches, as part of a total of £25,000 awarded to the East Midlands region.

The EMSSAS money will be used to help coaches to gain either Level 2 or Level 3 UKCC Coaching qualifications.

Applicants can be coaching on a paid or voluntary basis, and eligible sports include badminton, cricket, golf, hockey, swimming, Rugby League, squash, table tennis, tennis and triathlon. All other sports will be considered through the usual Derbyshire Coach Bursary Fund.

The money is one-off, short-term funding that must be allocated before the end of the financial year on March 31, and so applications must be received by January 31.

The money will be fed into the Derbyshire Coach Bursary Fund, run by Derbyshire Sport, and so will be awarded using the same guidelines.

This means coaches can apply for up to 50 per cent of the total cost of training, up to a maximum of £200.

Councillor Clive Moesby, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “We welcome this additional funding and would urge all coaches to apply.

“Derbyshire Sport would very much like to achieve the target of 20 coaches gaining Level 2/3 plus more through the usual route.

“By supporting coaches to gain accredited qualifications, we hope more young people will get a better, more positive experience of sport, and in turn this will see more young people taking part in sport regularly and achieving the highest level they can.”
