Derby triathlete selected to join national talent camp

4 January 2008

Derby triathlete Tom Bishop is among 75 of Britain’s future Olympic hopefuls to be selected to take part in the Youth Sport Trust’s second National Talent Orientation Camp.

Tom and his fellow young athletes will get a unique insight into what it takes to become the best, with double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes among the elite athletes who will act as a mentor during the four-day event.

Tom’s achievements to date include winning a gold medal at the Under 23 and Youth European Championships in Finland in July, as part of the Corus British Triathlon Youth Boys team.

He had earlier taken victory at the National Youth Triathlon Championships, and was a runner-up in the Junior Sportsman of the Year category at the 2007 Derby City Sports Awards.

The National Talent Orientation Camp is for 14 to 17-year-olds in five sports – canoeing, rowing, cycling, sailing and triathlon – who have been identified by their sport’s governing body as having the potential to make it as elite athletes.

The camp will run from January 5 to 8 at Loughborough University, and will combine high quality training sessions with workshops on ability and determination, keynote speeches on education and lifestyle planning, and a question and answer session with elite performers.

Members of the Armed Forces will also put the young athletes through their paces during a series of command tasks designed to build confidence, self-esteem and develop skills in leadership and teamwork.
