Bronze medals for Molly

23 December 2008

Derbyshire athlete Molly Slifkin won two bronze medals at the recent World Kickboxing and karate Association World Amateur Championships in Florida.

The 14-year-old, from Doveridge, practises karate and XMA (Extreme Martial Arts), a form of karate, dance and gymnastics at an academy in Burton.

She and several others from the academy represented England at the competition in Florida, and the team picked up several medals.

The event was Molly’s first international competition.

While XMA is a relatively new sport in the UK, it is very popular in Germany, Italy, Canada and the USA and competition was intense. Heats were held over three days at the Disney sports arena in Orlando with the finals over two days.

Molly (pictured) took bronze in extreme forms junior individual females (13 - 18 years) and the junior team open event with two fellow students from the academy.
