Hit the ground running in 2009 with the Hilcote Family Fun Run

Derbyshire families are being invited to hit the ground running in 2009, by taking part in the Hilcote Family Fun Run.

The new 5k event will be held for the first time on Sunday, January 4, and is being organised by Blackwell and District Young Striders Athletics Club.

The race will start and finish at Hilcote Community Centre, with the course running along part of the Blackwell Trail, and is open to families and first-time runners, as well as the more experienced.

Rob Platts, head coach at Blackwell and District Young Striders said: “Our club aims to get children and young people more active, and show them that running is fun.

“The Hilcote Family Fun Run is a chance for families to get active together and enjoy the outdoors after a Christmas spent eating, drinking and watching TV.”

Organisers are hoping to attract more than 100 runners of all ages to the event. Anyone who would like to take part is asked to enter on the day. The cost is £1.50 per person or £5 for a family of four.

The race will begin at 11am, and entrants should arrive early to register.

The event is being supported by Jog Derbyshire, a new county wide project which aims to encourage people to become fitter and be more active by starting to jog on a regular basis with people of similar fitness levels.

A network of community based jogging groups is currently being set up, aimed at anyone who is new to jogging or has not run for a long time, and it is hoped that groups will be established in the Bolsover area early in the new year.

Up and Running, the UK's largest independent specialist running retailer, is providing race numbers and a number of spot prizes for the Hilcote Family Fun Run.
