David, British Cycling's Director of Performance, was presented with his award by Dame Kelly Holmes and former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan.

He took the award in recognition of the unprecedented success enjoyed by his teams at both the World Championships and the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics this year.

David, from Ilkeston, had previously been named Coach of the Year at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards and received a Special Award for Outstanding Achievements in 2008 at the Derbyshire Sports Awards.

Also flying the flag for Derbyshire at the biggest event in the history of Sports Personality – with a sell-out audience of around 9,000, filling Liverpool's new Echo Arena – was Bill Halstead.

The Matlock-based rugby coach won the Unsung Hero Award at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards, and made the top three at the national awards.

The event was broadcast live on BBC One, and was hosted by Gary Lineker, Sue Barker and Jake Humphrey.
