Disability cricket taster session aiming to attract new players

29 August 2008

People with a disability who fancy playing cricket, joining a team and having fun were invited to a free taster session held in Derbyshire.

The disability cricket taster session was staged at Queens Park Cricket Ground in Chesterfield on Thursday, September 11, and was open to anyone with a physical or learning disability.

Coaches who would like to have a go at coaching disabled people were also welcome.

The aim of the session was to attract new players and coaches, and it was organised by Paul Roe from Derbyshire Disabled Cricket Club, Chesterfield Cricket Club Chairman Mike Taylor and Derbyshire Sport Disability Sports Development Officer Catherine Davies.

During the taster session members of the Derbyshire Disabled Cricket Club trained at the Chesterfield ground, including George Dutton, who was recently selected to play for the 13-man England Physical Disability Select XI team.

They were due to face the England Learning Disability XI on Wednesday, August 20, but the match was called off due to rain.

Derbyshire Sport Disability Sports Development Officer Catherine Davies said: “The disability cricket match which had been due to be held in Chesterfield had attracted a lot of interest.

“On the back of this we decided to organise a disability cricket taster session.”

Derbyshire Disabled Cricket Club trains at Darley Abbey Cricket Club every Wednesday.

The club currently has 20 active players, aged from 14 to 57, including one female player, and plays six county fixtures a year in the British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities county league plus a number of friendlies.

New members are always welcome, and the club is open to men and women of any age who have a physical or learning disability.
