Funding boost secures Community Sports Coach posts for further 12 months

Derbyshire’s Community Sports Coach Scheme has been granted additional funding which will secure all coaching posts until October 2008, and many until March 31, 2009 or beyond.

Derbyshire Sport has worked with 14 partners across the county to extend 24 Community Sports Coach posts by an additional 12 months, and the extension funding includes £100,100 from Sport England.

This will be matched by an additional £289,900 which has been secured from other partners.

The 24 posts involved include seven full-time and 17 part-time posts of between eight and 30 hours per week, and cover lawn tennis, golf, cricket, swimming, rugby union, cycling, athletics, outdoor activities and multi-sport.

Between them they will work more than 15,000 hours, and coach more than 37,000 young people.

This will include 13,000 females and 1,600 disabled young people.

Derbyshire Sport has also secured Community Investment Funding to financially support Community Sports Coaches gain further qualifications and access continuous professional development.

All Community Sports Coaches will be offered the opportunity to attend three bespoke training days based on their identified needs, and will also have the opportunity to gain financial support towards higher level sport specific qualifications.

Councillor Clive Moesby, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “The Community Sports Coach Scheme has been a huge success across Derbyshire with thousands of young people receiving coaching in many different sports so far.

“The partners involved have worked extremely hard to secure partner funding to enable the extension to happen. The additional 12 months extension will offer the coaches job security as many of these posts were due to come to an end.

“It is hoped Sport England will be able to provide a more long term picture with regard to coaching over the next few months.”
