PCT Obesity Fund cash supports Extending Activities Programme

8 April 2008

Derbyshire’s work around the Extending Activities programme has been given a welcome cash boost from Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust.

Derbyshire Sport has secured an additional £80,000 from the PCT’s Obesity Fund, which will be used to help buy dance mats or cyber coach systems.

Paul Goodley, Partnership Development Manager for Amber Valley School Sports Partnership, was a key driving force in securing this additional funding for the County.

The extra funding equates to an additional £10,000 per district, and frees up some of the Extending Activities money from the Department for Culture Media and Sport to be spent on other activities which would not have been possible without the additional PCT funding.

The Extending Activities programme expands the work of after-school and community clubs across England as part of the Government’s Five Hour Offer, and Derbyshire Sport is one of several Community Sports Partnership ‘trailblazers’.

The funding can build on existing provision or be used to create new opportunities through sport for young people aged between five and 19 across Derbyshire.

This funding will help bring together the worlds of school and community sport, along with greater partnership working with other organisations and agendas, such as, Youth Service, Further Education, Positive Activities and Extended Services. This work will aim to bring these (and other) organisations and agendas together to create a children and young peoples plan for sport, which incorporates all of these agendas.

This work will include the improvement of traditional clubs to accommodate and appeal to a wider range of children and young people, and investment into new types of ‘clubs’ which may be more informal or offer different types of sports activity.
