Runners train for 10k at Sporting Futures Breakfast Run

More than 30 people took part in a special Breakfast Run organised by Sporting Futures, in preparation for this year's Derbyshire Building Society 10k.

The run, at Derby's Darley Park, was the first of three training runs planned for some of those planning to take part in the 10k race in the city on April 20.

The event gave keen runners the chance to meet and train with like-minded people, and after a warm-up everyone took part in either a two-mile or four-mile training run. They were also rewarded at the end with a hearty breakfast of fruit, teacakes and muffins, with tea, coffee or orange juice.

Sporting Futures Operations Manager Sarah Clarke said: "The breakfast run went very well.

"I was worried beforehand about the weather, but in the end it was kind to us. 35 people singed up prior to the event and 31 turned up on the day.

"However, we could have taken more than 50 people the interest was so great."

The event saw Margaret Goodman, who will take part in the 10k for the first time this year, win a pair of Mizuno trainers in a prize draw.

Sunday's breakfast run also saw Margaret celebrate her 60th birthday, and despite being relatively new to running she completed the four-mile training session.

Two more breakfast runs are planned, with an 8k training run on Sunday, March 9 and a 10k practice on Sunday, April 6.

The Derbyshire Building Society 10k - which also includes a Team Challenge race and 3k Fun Run - will be held on April 20.

More than 1,300 people have so far signed up, and anyone else wishing to take part is urged to enter as soon as possible as there is a race limit of 3,000.
