New orienteering opportunities on way for county
Orienteering opportunities are to be increased across Derbyshire thanks to a successful Community Investment Fund bid by the East Midlands Orienteering Association.
The Sport England funding will be used to deliver a project that will see satellite hub clubs set up within Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
The project will bring three hub clubs to Derbyshire over a three year period, in Buxton, Derby City and Chesterfield.
The aim of the hubs is to provide opportunities for people to access orienteering locally, and to provide a bridge from the high level of orienteering delivered in schools to the local opportunities that exist in the county.
The clubs will complement Derwent Valley Orienteers, which will act as a parent club and provide opportunities for members of the hubs to experience and national orienteering events.
The hubs are supported by the local School Sports Partnerships in each area, and will enhance the delivery of orienteering on a local level encouraging interaction between schools and the club.
In addition, the hubs will also provide volunteering opportunities and will look to train volunteers in running the club, delivering and coaching orienteering and running localised events.
Derbyshire Sport Outdoor Activities Development Officer Craig Keegan said: “The successful funding bid is great news for orienteering in the county.
“Derbyshire Sport has backed the application from the beginning and continues to support the project and wishes it every success in its delivery.”
