More than 3,000 runners enjoy Derbyshire Building Society 10k, Fun Run and Team Challenge
More than 3,000 runners enjoyed the Derbyshire Building Society 10k, Fun Run and Championing Derbyshire Team Challenge on Sunday.
The race, organised by Sporting Futures, began and finished at Pride Park Stadium, with the route also taking in Derby city centre.
Winners of the Championing Derbyshire Team Challenge was The Derby Runner team, which won a team day out to Alton Towers.
Taking second place was the Toyota UK Runners II team, which won corporate hospitality at Derbyshire County Cricket Club, and in third place was PwC Elites, which won ten tickets to a Derby County football match.
The Team Challenge was open to workforces across Derbyshire, and aims to encourage work colleagues to become more active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle together.
More than 350 people signed up to the Team Challenge, with 63 teams of between four and ten competing in the race, and the top four individual 10k finish places from each team counted towards the result.
It was supported by the Derbyshire Management Group for the 2012 Games in partnership with the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) in a bid to encourage more individuals and businesses to get involved in sport and physical activity.
Also winning prizes on the day was GEM Team 2, which collected ten one-day passes for Virgin Active after being drawn out of the hat in the Most Runners in the Team category.
CP Notts Boys received a selection of Kukri Sports Kit for being the first team to enter, and Derby Uni Fairies received five family ice skating passes for Nottingham’s National Ice Centre, for the best dressed team.
Every team which ran was also entered into a draw for a Thorntons Luxury Chocolate Surprise, and this was won by Planning & Design Derby.
In the individual 10k race, the winner was Martin Whitehouse, with a time of 31mins 27 sec. In second place was Johnny Gilby, and in third place was Ian Williams. The first woman to finish was Beth Eburne, second was Nicola Clay and in third place was Sharon Orridge.
The entire event was organised by Sporting Futures, which uses sport to reach out to young people and help them gain life skills and communicate better with those around them.
