Lord Coe to visit Derbyshire

Lord Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, is to visit Derbyshire later this month.

The double Olympic Champion and 12-time world record holder in Athletics will attend the launch of the Derbyshire Plan for the 2012 Games on April 22.

He will address invited guests – providing them with an overview of London 2012’s plans - at the Gateway Centre at Derbyshire County Cricket Club, which was last month chosen as a suitable training venue for teams from all over the world to use in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The launch of the Derbyshire Plan for the 2012 Games will be presented by Peter Richardson, Chair of the Derbyshire Management Group for the 2012 Games.

The purpose of the Plan is to ensure that Derbyshire plays its full part in contributing to the success of the 2012 Games and maximises the opportunities to inspire young people, and improve the county’s economy and the health and well being of residents.

The Plan outlines a number of goals, including inspiring young people, increasing the number of people playing sport in Derbyshire, developing talented sports people in Derbyshire, and encouraging more volunteering in sport in Derbyshire.

Seb was previously Chairman of the London 2012 bid company. He won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m at both the Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 Games, and retired from competitive athletics in 1990. In 2002 he was made a Peer - Lord Coe of Ranmore, and received a knighthood in the 2006 New Year's Honours List.
