Group looks to develop disability sport in Erewash

The Erewash Disability Sports Group has been formed to develop sport and physical activity opportunities for disabled people in the area.

At the group's first meeting, held at Long Eaton Town Hall, a total of nine representatives from statutory and voluntary agencies from areas such as health, education and social care attended, and a second meeting will take place shortly.

The group heard from Derbyshire Sport's Disability Sports Development Officer Catherine Davies, who told how district groups were already working effectively in other areas of the county.

Members then went on to discuss what needed to be done in their area, and pinpointed a number of priorities.

These included inviting local disabled people to join the group, and training staff at facilities, clubs and community groups so that they are able to take a lead on disability provision.

In addition, work to provide more out of hours school activities for both mainstream and special school children was also discussed.

The purpose of the group is to develop sport and physical activity opportunities for disabled people, and to support existing organisations like local clubs, facilities and community organisations which are currently delivering activities within the community to be inclusive.

The group would also welcome new members, and would be interested to hear from anyone who has an interest in developing sport and physical activities for disabled people.

If you are a sports development officer, volunteer, parent/carer, education worker, health worker, member of a club or voluntary/charity organisation who would like to be involved contact Disability Sports Development Officer Catherine Davies.
