Derbyshire Athletics Action Plan is launched for 2008/09

The Derbyshire Athletics Action Plan 2008/09, outlining plans for the development of the sport within the county, was officially launched at the Derbyshire Sportshall Athletics Finals.

The Plan aims to guide and support those currently involved in all aspects of athletics, as well as helping to encourage new participants and volunteers to get involved with athletics in Derbyshire.

It has been developed by England Athletics following a long consultation process with Derbyshire Sport and other local partners, which sought the views of clubs, coaches, officials and athletes to determine how to focus development.

Launching the Plan was England Athletics Performance and Development Co-ordinator Stephen Moore, who gave a short presentation to club officials and team managers as well as other local partners ahead of the Yr 5/6 Derbyshire Sportshall Athletics Finals at Moorways Sports Centre in Derby.

The Plan highlights the priorities for athletics development in the county over the next year, and is guided by targets set by England Athletics and Derbyshire Sport, as well as taking national Government targets for sports participation into account.

It gives an overview of the athlete pathway and the opportunities available to athletes as they improve and progress, covering participation, workforce development, talent development and identification, club development and the overall management structure.

England Athletics will deliver the plan with support from Derbyshire Sport. The plan outlines key targets such as increasing the number of school club link partnerships, increasing the number of qualified coaches and also clearly shows how the new JogEngland project will be implemented in the county.

England Athletics Performance and Development Co-ordinator Stephen Moore said: “This new plan is the next step in terms of creating an exciting and sustainable athletics community in Derbyshire.

“Although England Athletics East Midlands will be delivering the plan it is hoped that due to the thorough consultation process all local partners can take responsibility for ensuring the plan is a success.

“It is hoped that everyone associated with athletics in Derbyshire will benefit from this new action plan and with new partnerships formed and support from Derbyshire Sport we believe this can be achieved.”

Councillor Clive Moesby, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “The launch of the Derbyshire Athletics Action Plan 2008/09 is a great step forward.

“It provides opportunities for those already competing in athletics at any level to develop, and also to encourage more participants.

“I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the sport within Derbyshire and hope that we can become one of the most successful counties in the country within athletics.”
