2,400 10K Runners

More than 2,400 runners of all abilities took part in the annual Derby 10K and Family Fun run held on Sunday 23 May organised by Sporting Futures. Last year 1,138 people finished the 10K but this year the number reached over 1,440 with entrants coming from all over England.

Peter Richardson, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire Building Society, who are the main sponsors, started the 10K race with Rammie kicking off the fun run.

The 10K route took runners from Pride Park into town, through East St, the Market Place past the Cathedral and Council House and back to finish inside Pride Park Stadium with a grandstand finish & enthusiastic, cheering supporters in the stands. “Great event and as a Rams fan it was very exciting to finish the stadium” stated MRF on runners world web site.

Robert Knott from Sport England “It was the first time I’d ran in the race and thought it was a brilliant event. It was a great to run with 1,500 runners through Derby and finish in Pride Park.”

Derby Serenaders, clowns, magicians and face painters were at Pride Park to keep everyone entertained and amused. Jackie Bates led the warm up and along with Rammie and Damon Parkin got everyone in the mood for the fun run which saw over 800 take part, plenty in costumes. A sponsored wheelchair users push, organised by Keith Marson of Derby County, raised over £2,000 for the DRI stroke unit.

Ruth Whitaker, Development Director of Sporting Futures said “ It was good to see so many people taking part and the money raised from this run will help Sporting Futures to develop healthy, crime-free communities by using sport and recreation to encourage social inclusion throughout Derbyshire.”

The Chief Constable of Derbyshire as a trustee of Sporting Futures attended and can be seen here making the prize presentations to the winners.

In total there were around 200 volunteers who all helped make the day succesfull in a variety of ways, displaying enthusiasm and good humour.

Sponsorship from the Derbyshire Building Society and Sportsmatch ensures that this event will take place for another year.
