Young people

Lord Coe, in his speech to the International Olympic Committee, said: “London’s vision is to reach young people – young people all around the world and connect them with the power of The Games.”

Our plan is to connect the young people of Derbyshire with The Games and to explore how this can be achieved across the whole curriculum in schools and more broadly in the community.

Partners will be working to deliver the Public Service Agreement 22: “Deliver a successful Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and Sport.”

Work has begun to achieve this vision and additional funds available within the county to improve opportunities for young people through “The Five Hour Offer”.

Since 2008 there have been increased opportunities to participate in school sport, extended activities and a new infrastructure to promote sport and community links has been introduced within FE colleges.

Education Opportunities

More than 390 schools and colleges in Derbyshire  - more than 70% of all schools in the county - have already signed up to be part of Get Set - the London 2012 education programme, and there are around 90 active Network members.

The programme offers children and young people aged 3-19 years the opportunity to learn more about the Olympic and Paralympic values and to play their part in the 2012 Games.

Charlotte Infant and Nursery School in Ilkeston was named Get Set School of the Month for November 2010. The school won a visit from top Olympic gymnast and motivator Craig Heap, and were also visited by a film crew.

Meanwhile, in recognition of their active Get Set Network membership, Bemrose School and Landau Forte College took part in the official Torch Relay announcement event in Derby where it was revealed that the Olympic Torch Relay would be visiting Derby and Derbyshire on June 29, 2012.
