One year to go celebrations held in Derbyshire

Celebrations to mark one year to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London have been held in Derby and Derbyshire.

Derby’s Market Place played host to a day-long celebration which featured sports demonstrations, dance and music performances from local clubs and groups including Derby City Gymnastics Club, Derby Athletics Club, Derby Taekwondo, Derby Sportsability Club and the Derbyshire Boxing Association.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch was exhibited in front of the Derby Live Site, and visitors to the celebrations also had the chance to see Olympic history, as the torch from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and the 1948 Olympic Games were also on display.

Derby’s International Cultural Festival banners, a Lottery-funded partnership project between School Sports Partnerships and Leisure and Cultural Services, were also on display for the first time, showing how 17 secondary schools in the city have been working with artists from different countries.

Celebration event for families were also held at Carsington Water, Glossopdale Astro Turf Pitch and St Philip Howard Sport Centre, which included demonstrations and taster sessions in a huge variety of sports from local sports providers and dance artists.

At Carsington Water activities included parachute games, football, Ju –jitsu, athletics, Kwik Cricket, Tri-golf, gymnastics and boccia, as well as guided walks and watersports.

In Glossop activities included boccia, trampolining, football, athletics, golf, tennis and Zumba.
