GB Paralympian Leon Taylor to visit Cherry Tree Hill Primary School on International Paralympic Day

7 September 2011

GB Paralympian and 2012 hopeful Leon Taylor will visit Cherry Tree Hill Primary School in Chaddesden to share his experiences and give a blind football demonstration, to mark International Paralympic Day.

Thursday, September 8 is International Paralympic Day, with activities taking place across the world to celebrate everything that is good about Paralympic Sport.

Leon, who has been involved with the England Cerebral Palsy Team for eight years and competed at the Beijing Paralympics, will speak at two assemblies, for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils.

He will talk about living with a disability and being involved in sport, and will also share his experiences of competing in Beijing and look ahead to the London 2012 Paralympics, at which he hopes to compete.

Leon will also give a blind football demonstration with some of the Year 3 pupils.

Leon said: “Being part of the team which competed at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing was amazing, and I’m looking forward to being able to share some of my experiences with the pupils and hopefully inspire some of them to find a passion for sport.

“This year’s International Paralympic Day is the last one before the start of the Paralympic Games in London, and so it is the perfect time to boost the profile of Paralympic sports. I hope that next year many more people will be playing Paralympic sports and that everyone will be supporting Great Britain’s athletes as they compete on the world stage.”

Leon also officially started the Jog Derbyshire 5k at Shipley Country Park on September 4, where a number of sporting activities and demonstrations were held to help mark ‘one year to go’ until the start of the Paralympic Games in London.

The Paralympic Games takes place in London from Wednesday, August 29, 2012 to Sunday, September 9, 2012.

Applications for tickets to the Paralympic Games will open on Friday, September 9, 2011 and close on Monday, September 26. 2011. UK residents can also complete a paper ticket application form contained in the official ticketing guide which can be collected from your local TSB branch.
