The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has awarded Derby College with network status in recognition of its involvement in the London 2012 education programme.
It now join schools and colleges across the UK as members of the special London 2012 community, the Get Set network, and will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the coming years.
Derby College’s work to earn the network status has included working with young people and teachers in Malawi, setting up a Sportsability Club at the college to provide a range of sporting opportunities for students with disabilities and running the Sports Fusion European student event at the College.
Derby College Assistant Principal, Sport and Leisure Peter Gordon, said: “We are all proud that London is hosting the Olympic Games and we want to make sure that this is one to remember for all of our students and for the surrounding communities.”
Sebastian Coe, Chairman of LOCOG added: “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people.
“I am very proud to welcome Derby College into the Get Set network for their exciting work around the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality.”
