Déda to produce 2012 Legacy Trust Community Celebration

17 March 2011

Two of Derby’s leading arts organisations - Déda and QUAD - have beaten competition from across the country to produce a £1m cultural spectacular inspired by the Olympic Games.

Déda Producing is the driving force behind one of four UK events to be awarded funding from Legacy Trust for a Community Celebration event designed to create a cultural legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Déda has teamed up with the Brighton-based Arts Agenda and renowned choreographer Lea Anderson to create Games Time, a series of stunning large scale games, projections and community events that will visit Skegness, Loughborough, Northampton, and London during the Games, and finally back to Derby for the annual Festé.

Déda Producing will act as executive producer.

Stephen Munn, Déda Producing director, said: “Games Time is a high profile national project that reflects the cultural ambitions of Derby and the East Midlands.

“Déda Producing is proud to be working with a group of internationally recognised artists on this large scale event that will push artistic boundaries in a spectacular way. The Games Time team comprises of Lea Anderson (Artistic Director), Walk The Plank, Mahogany, QUAD, Mick McNicholas and Arts Agenda. This project will bring a flavour of the Olympics to the East Midlands.”

Games Time is one of four Community Celebrations to be funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As well as the East Midlands, Legacy Trust UK is helping to stage similar scale events in Scotland, Northern Ireland and South East England.

Games Time has been funded by Legacy Trust UK and partners including the Arts Council England and Derby City Council.

Each Games Time features around 200 performers, huge board games, street performances, video projections, fireworks, music and community events. Strong links to London 2012 will be made through film and animation.

Keith Jeffery, director of QUAD, said: “This is a significant event and QUAD is highly excited to be involved in such a large scale project.

“Games Time will be a landmark project and a chance for the East Midlands to properly celebrate Olympic year.”

Alan Grimadell, Derby City Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “We are delighted that Derby will play such an integral part in Games Time in the East Midlands.  It is a fantastic way to conclude the Cultural Olympiad in the region and promises to be a visually spectacular event that will showcase the creative credentials that Derby and the East Midlands have to offer.

“The legacy of Games Time will be far reaching and will bring together the many different sections of our community in one large participatory event that will carry the spirit of the Olympic Games at its heart.”

Paul Robinson, Strategic Director for Neighbourhoods, Derby City Council, said: “Derby Festé and Derby City Council are delighted to be welcoming Games Time to our city.

“This event places communities as its creative centre and being able to present it is a milestone for Festé as it shows the ambition for the arts and culture within Derby and the wider East Midlands.”

Dugold Mackie, chair of Legacy Trust UK, said: “Games Time will help spread the magic and excitement of the 2012 Games outside London and leave a lasting legacy across the East Midlands. The Games aren’t just for two weeks, and they’re not just for sports fans.  Through projects such as this, they will have an enduring impact on many people’s lives.”

Games Time will be at the SO Festival in Skegness from July 22 to 24, 2011; The Spark Festival in Loughborough in May 2012; Northampton in July 2012; Victoria Park in London in August 2012 and Derby Festé in September 2012.

Déda Producing is the sister company of Déda which specialises in large-scale outdoor events.
