Developing talent

The Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund was launched in December 2007 and supports young performers who compete for England or Great Britain or who have the potential to do so in the future.

A total of 76 performers each received a bursary of £300 in the first year, to help them make the most of their talent.

This increased to 108 athletes in 2009, who each received £300 to help meet costs such as travel, training and equipment, and in 2010 bursaries of up to £300 were awarded to 109 athletes.

Bursaries of up to £300 were again awarded in 2011, to 159 athletes from Derbyshire.

Recent successes of some of the athletes supported by the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund include:

  • 15-year-old Derventio eXcel swimmer Molly Renshaw has qualified for the Great Britain team which will compete at the World Championships in Shanghai. Molly swam in the final of the 200m Breaststroke at the ASA Senior National Championships, and qualified after beating her own British and English Age Group records in a time of 2.27.67.

  • 16-year-old Madeleine Thompson, from Hope, was part of the GB Women’s squad which won gold at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.

  • Allestree golfer Bradley Moore, (13), became the youngest ever winner of the Midlands Schools’ Golf Championships.

  • 15-year-old Harry Webster, from Chellaston, has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Olympic Youth festival in Turkey this summer.

We are using the focus on the Paralympics to create more opportunities for disabled people in Derbyshire to take part in sport and to develop performance pathways so that more disabled people from Derbyshire go on to compete internationally in sport.
