11-year-old badminton player Katherine, who is a member of the Derbyshire Performance Centre, is one of six girls who are members of the U13 England training squad. She is ranked in the top ten in England in both singles and doubles. She reached the quarter finals of the English National Championships (U13 age group).
Katie says: "I have just started my first year at secondary school. I love sport and my favourite sports are badminton, swimming and lifesaving. My favourite hobbies are water-skiing, wake-boarding and knee-boarding.
"I have been a member of Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) for a year in relation to my badminton and this has been really helpful to me. This year at the Under-13 gold tournament in York, I got a gold medal in level doubles and a bronze medal in mixed doubles. My current Badminton England national ranking is ninth in singles and seventh in level doubles.
"I currently play matches for the Derbyshire under-13 team and also the under-15's team. My future ambitions in Badminton are to win more medals and trophies in the coming season, beat my brother and to win at least one medal at the nationals.
"I hope that ICON will enable me to become a better athlete. It will help pay for some lessons and equipment and will also help fund the cost of court fees at my local leisure centre so I can get in some extra practice, hopefully increasing my chances of success in the future."
