Ella Rush with her Junior Sportsperson of the Year award.

Judges were so impressed with the contenders for the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award that four made the final shortlist, but it was Amber Valley's Ella Rush, from Hazelwood, near Belper, who was victorious after shooting to the top of the UK long jump rankings for her age and winning a national 200m title.

High Peak golfer Archie Qualtrough, from New Mills, South Derbyshire golfer, Charlie Ward, from Rosliston, and Bolsover cyclist George Cooper were the runners-up after winning in their respective districts.

"I was really pleased to be nominated as a finalist and it was really exciting to come to the awards night," said eight-year-old George, a Bolsover and District Cycling Club member. "I love mountain biking – it's so much fun."

Proud dad Tim added: "George is particularly proud of winning the East Midlands Road Championship, where he was winning the race quite comfortably and the chain came off his bike with about 200m to go, so he jumped off the bike and ran with it.

"It was a Chris Froome-style Tour de France finish, but I think Chris copied George, as he did it first!"
