Everyone active, enjoying sport
and achieving their personal best

David Hong

David is a 15-year-old badminton player from Allestree who is an England Programme player . He won a European Under-15 Junior Championships bronze medal in the mixed doubles and, like his sister, is a member of the Derby shire Performance Centre Squad and is also on the Derbyshire Institute of Sport programme.

David says: "I first started playing badminton when I was seven years old as both my brothers were already playing at a high level, so it was only natural I was introduced to the sport and found I really enjoyed it.

"Next season my top priority is keeping injury-free due to already having not been able to fully train for six months. Aside from keeping injury-free, domestically I'm looking to cement myself at the top of my age group in my respective disciplines, whilst competing and beating the top players in age groups above, and therefore would like to win the Under-17 Nationals in doubles and mixed.

"Internationally, my target for next season is also to show that I am one of the best players in Europe and ultimately final in the doubles and mixed at the Under-17 European championships.

"At the moment, I am training 18 hours a week, of which four hours is spent on strength and conditioning thanks to the support of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, who also help with other aspects in and around badminton including physio support.

"Next season, I will also start to look at playing international senior events due to having more financial flexibility thank to the funding granted to me by the ICON programme."
