Daniel Wellbourn Hesp.

Daniel is a 14-year-old sailor from Bonsall who races in the Laser 4.7 Dinghy class in which he was selected for the RYA UK National Junior Summer Squad. He also competed in the European Championships, as well as finishing third in the National Championships at Weymouth.

Daniel says: "I currently sail a Laser 4.7 at County, National and International level. I competed in the National 4.7 Ladder in 2015-2016, where I finished in 18th place and was 10th Boy.

"I was selected for the RYA National Summer Squad 2016. I was was one of 30 sailors selected to sail for Great Britain in the European Laser 4.7 Championships held in Crozon-Morgat in Brittany, France in June this year. I finished 126 of 212 Youth (Under 18) Boy sailors and was 44th in Under-16.

"I have just been selected as one of eight Boys for the RYA National Junior Winter Squad 2016/17. This involves six training events totalling 16 days between the end of October to the end of March, there are two four day residential camps and four weekend camps.

"These will be spread round the country from Grafham Water Centre, to the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth and the Welsh Sailing Academy in Pwllheli.

"I am working hard on my sailing technique and fitness over the winter so that I will be competitive at the European Laser 4.7 Championships in Murcia, southern Spain at Easter and the World Championships in Nieuwport, Belgium in July 2017.

"I plan to transition into the Laser Radial towards the end of 2017. I will be getting a single handed foiling dinghy, probably a WASZP in early 2017. I feel foiling boats such as the Waszp, Moth and the America's Cup catamarans are the exciting future."
