Simon King - Darley Abbey Cricket Club

Simon King, from Derby, began volunteering three years ago after his two sons started playing cricket.

When the pair joined Darley Abbey Cricket Club, the club was also appealing for people to get involved in its running, and so Simon offered to help.

Since then he has been involved in coaching many of the young people in the club’s seven junior teams, and has added to his CV with the completion of Level One and Level Two ECB coaching qualifications.

Simon said: “It’s really rewarding to see the boys and girls improving, not just from a cricket or sport point of view, but in things like team effort and athletic development.”

Simon, who works full-time as an IT project manager, is part of a team of volunteers at the club, and he currently coaches the U11 and U13 hard ball teams.

This involves around ten hours a week during the cricket season, with matches on a Friday evening and Sunday morning, and coaching sessions on a Saturday morning and Wednesday evening.

Simon said: “It can be hectic sometimes, especially when there are evening activities during the week and you have to rush from work straight to coaching, but it all fits in and is brilliant fun.”
