Step Into Sport
Step in Sport is an exciting new initiative, which encourages more young people to become involved in sport in their local communities. It aims to provide a structured path to attract people into rewarding sports volunteering and to use their experience and talents to enrich local community and school sport.
Over 48,000 young people nationally aged 14-19 will be involved each year over the next two years through a network of schools partnerships.
Training and support will be given to young people to develop their leadership skills through sport and to volunteer in their local communities.
At least 6,000 older volunteers will train with and act as mentors to these young people. The Step into Sport programme will also assist National Governing Bodies to devise and implement action plans to provide longer term volunteering opportunities.
Derbyshire is one of two pilot schemes in the East Midlands to take on this project.
The Youth Sport Trust have been contracted to deliver Step Into Sport through the School Sport Co-ordinator Partnerships. In Derbyshire this is Anthony Gell - Derbyshire Dales, Leesbrook and Derby Moor - Derby City.
They will also provide support for the project to Buxton Community School - High Peak and Brookfield School - Chesterfield.
20 Students who have already completed their Community Sports Leader Award will be chosen from each Partnership to attend a one-day conference organised by the Forum.
After the conference students will be placed in sports clubs of their choice.
The Forum will be responsible for preparing the club to receive the volunteers and providing the students with information about upcoming courses and other events that they may be intereseted in getting involved in.
Students completing 50,100 or 200 hours volunteering will have the opportunity to attend an Awards ceremony organised by Youth Sport Trust which recognises the efforts of the volunteers.
