Two new Community Sport Coaches start work in Amber Valley

John Cooper and Craig Statham, both 23, took up their posts in mid-December, with John covering North Amber Valley and Craig Statham working in the South of the district.

In their new roles they will deliver high-quality sports coaching in curriculum and after school, as well as the outreach holiday scheme and nightreach programme, as part of the Amber Valley Sport Development Leadership programme.

They will also train and act as mentors to Amber Valley’s Entry to Employment (e2e) scheme trainees and sports leaders, and work with the wider community to develop community based initiatives and programmes with Community Sport Development Officer Alfie Smith.

John, from Spondon in Derby, previously worked for Derby-based charity Sporting Futures, which uses sport to reach out to young people and help them gain life skills and communicate better with those around them.

He has more than four years coaching experience and holds numerous coaching qualifications including a BTEC National Diploma In Sports Development and Fitness, Level Two in football, Level One in basketball, athletics and badminton, and a Sports Leaders UK Tutor Award.

Craig, from Mansfield, previously worked for Bolsover District Council, where he started as a casual coach before becoming a Community Sports Coach.

His coaching experience includes working with disabled people and the communities, and he has several Level One coaching qualifications as well as a Level Two qualification in basketball.

Amber Valley Community Sport Development Officer Alfie Smith said: "We have two excellent coaches working with Amber Valley, who both are rising every day to the challenges given to them and are progressing each day in schools. We are happy with their great performance and this is only the beginning for them."
