Ben Haylett

Ben Haylett.

The 14-year-old canoeist, from Breaston and a student at Friesland Secondary School, is a member of the Holme Pierrepoint Club, winning the British Junior Championships at under-16 and under-14 level, earning him selection for the British Canoeing Super Regional Squad.#

Ben says: "I have paddled for England in both K1 (kayak single) and C2 (canoe doubles). My training is split between land based and water based training sessions, and I complete five water sessions and two gym sessions a week, as well as multiple weekends of racing during the season.

"The ICON bursary will enable me to access gyms, to enhance my fitness and help fund my dreams and aspirations in canoe slalom. My ultimate goal is to make it onto the Olympic selection pathway and to compete for GB.

"However, in the meantime, I am working hard to continue to represent my country, maintain my fitness and look to improve all aspects of my paddling.

"Most of my training takes place at Holme Pierrepoint, the home of the National Water Sports Centre. I train there five times per week, and thoroughly love what I do.

"However, it is 45 minutes from my home, so even weekly travel costs are quite significant. The bursary, therefore, is helping greatly towards the cost of travel and equipment, and I am truly grateful."
