Taekwondo competitor Alice competes in sparring, patterns and special techniques. The 15-year-old John Flamsteed Community School pupil took first place in the 58kg sparring at the English Open and also placed third in the black belt girls patterns. She took second place in both events at the North West Open, and at the London Open Championships she won the black belt girls 1st Dan patterns and the black belt girls 14-17 under-58kg sparring.
Alice says: "It's been a year of ups and downs in taekwon-do for me. I started with a couple of difficult competitions and though I think I performed well, didn't get into any medal positions.
"I met some tough opposition and didn't seem to have much luck but bounced back by winning medals at the English Open in Guildford. After that, I did well in the subsequent competitions, the highlight achieving double gold at the London Open by winning the girls black-belt sparring and first dan patterns and was ranked the best junior black-belt in the competition.
"I have stayed with Heart of England Taekwon-do, but now train at Alfreton under Mrs Bradshaw. She has helped me a lot especially with my confidence going into competition and I am enjoying my training and look forward to every session.
"I still train weekly with the HoE Elite squad which includes some of the best competitors in the UK. We are hoping to send a team to the European Championships in Holland in spring.
"It's going to be a busy year, as, along with taekwon-do, I will be taking my GCSEs. I have also started a part-time job, but I am looking forward to the challenge."
